Updated Guideline on Antibiotics and Prosthetic Joints

An updated American Dental Association clinical practice guideline last evaluated in 2012, finds that in general, for patients with prosthetic joint implants, the use of prophylactic antibiotics, or antibiotics administered to prevent the risk of infection, are not recommended prior to dental procedures to prevent prosthetic joint infection.  The guideline was created by a panel of experts tasked by the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs. For years dentists have been instructed to prescribe antibiotics for patients with joint implants prior to dental appointments.  This referenced study concludes that this is no longer required or recommended. The study also notes that some patients may be nervous to change their antibiotic regimen.  My experience is that our patients trust the conclusions of the study and are very happy to not have to take antibiotics prior to dental appointments.
